3 Pitfalls that Stop Your Job Search Cold
Job hunting can be stressful, challenging and difficult. But it’s never a dead-end road unless you didn’t plan enough to ways to move your job search forward. Don’t let this happen to you. There are a multitude of available jobs out there waiting to be filled. Claim yours and avoid these potential pitfalls.
Clinging to a negative mindset Don’t be your own enemy. Nothing can put your job search to a halt worse than thinking negatively. So before you even start your job hunting, clear your head first of any fears, doubts and worries. Do away with the what ifs because you’ll never know unless you try. Don’t say I can’t because if you have enough will, you can surprise yourself into achieving things you thought you can’t do. It’s not impossible to change careers because it’s been proven possible by a lot of people who dared. Certain limits on knowledge can be addressed by short courses and training. Don’t be afraid to go out there and take a chance!
Lack of strategy Don’t just apply for jobs using one source and then just lie and wait. Do follow up on your applications. Try to contact the employer or get yourself acquainted with someone from the company who can help you get your foot in the door. Have Plan B (or C, or D) available. If you don’t get any favorable responses from revise your cover letter and resume and try again. Opportunities come and go everyday. Don’t let the good ones pass you by just because you didn’t explore other options.
Relying solely on yourself No matter how much you think you can do everything yourself, still, sometimes you may need some help. If you don’t think your resume is representing the best side of you, then get assistance from a professional resume writer. If you’re getting no luck from advertised job openings then ask around. Tell your friends and acquaintances that you’re actively seeking a job. Use social networking to boost your job search. Golden opportunities are not often advertised and chances are, you will stumble upon them from unlikely sources.
Job search doesn’t have to be a tormenting experience. It can be productive (and sometimes fun) depending on how you choose to approach it. Submitting to these pitfalls can have you ending up with too little job choices (or worse, begging for them…and I will tell you now, grovelling is never a strong suit). Good luck with your search!

Great tips, Karen. I’ve been reading a book called “well being” that cites a study says the impact of being unemployed long term is actually more detrimental to someone’s well being than a life event like death of a family member. I’d totally agree with not relying on yourself, (as fabulous as you are), I’ve heard of amazing opportunities coming people’s way from just getting out and getting social.

Thank you for generously lending your name to this post, Karalyn.
(I think you’re pretty fab too!) Sadly, job seekers will have to work a little harder and spend a little more time (maybe sometimes a little more money) even just to get a job. They don’t have to settle, and they have to remember that all their job hunting efforts have to be focused and deliberate…with that in mind it may take longer than usual to find the job they really want (versus the one that was offered by the first company that called). It’s a long road ahead (despite all the news we hear about recovery), and things happen that none of us expect. Just don’t lose hope, guys…that job you want is out there with your name on it!
