5 Sure Signs You Will Get the Job

What is more nerve-racking than the job interview itself is waiting for the results. The agony begins as you step right out of the room thinking of the mistakes you might have made during the interview, rather than the good things. You could hardly wait for the much anticipated call, fervently hoping for a second interview. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a hint of whether you did well or botched the job interview altogether? Here are some clues that might raise your hopes on your job application.

1. The next call. During your interview, a great sign that you are up for the job is when the hiring manager schedules you for a second interview. It could only mean that s/he wants to know more about you and how qualified you are for the job. Remarks like, “We will just call you,” can be devastating. The latter could be one of the signs that you have to move on and try out for another job.

2. Interview flow. Interviewers do not waste their time with unqualified applicants. Once your interview runs beyond the schedule, it is a good sign that everything is going your way. If the interview gets a little livelier and even more personal, it simply means that the interviewer is interested in you and most likely studying your traits carefully. Remember that some jobs are not just about the degree you have on your diploma, but how your personality can affect others within a team as well.

3. Meet and greet the team. Some interviewers are known to let the possible new hire meet the soon-to-be colleagues at work. If your interviewer does this, it is a good sign that you are winning. Interested future employers often want to know the kind of impression you have and how well other office personnel respond to you. No employer wastes their time in introducing you to the rest of the employees if s/he is not contemplating on making you part of the team.

4. Selling the company. When the interviewer spends more time talking in detail about the position or the organization and showing a detailed picture of the advantages of working for the company, it’s a positive sign that you are going to get the job. If s/he runs through a description of the role and culture that might make the job more appealing to you, it usually means s/he doesn’t want other companies to get you first!

5. Future boss reveals plans. One of the clear signs that you are getting the job is when your interviewer comments on how s/he is looking forward to having you as part of the team. If s/he discusses future plans with you, especially on a project that s/he thinks you might have a good game plan; it is a discreet way of welcoming you to the company. Take note of how s/he gets excited by the thought of having you in their team.

With the competition around you, putting your best foot forward during the job interview is crucial. Be very keen and try to read hints on whether you fit the job or not. However, there are no foolproof indicators. An interviewer can do any of the above, yet not mean anything by it; conversely, s/he may show great interest in you but eventually settle for someone else. If any of these signs happen, you know at least that you are still in the running. Who knows, you may just have a reason to celebrate – soon.

I’m glad you added the disclaimer at the end, Karen. While these are all great signs of a positive outcome, there is no 100% guarantee of a job. I remember one experience I had where everything went right. I went home, did my thank-you letter, waited, and then was told I didn’t get the job.

And while job seekers should always do thank-you letters post-interview, it is especially crucial if they have had great interview experiences. To not do so could cause the hiring committee to go with someone else who may have had just a similar interview and remembered the thank you.
