5 Ways to Effectively Build Bonds with Your Team
The workplace is full of people with diverse backgrounds. It’s like being in a jungle where it’s hard to distinguish the prey from the predator. Although people are theoretically expected to team up naturally, it takes everyone’s effort to create a dynamic team geared towards productivity. Whether you’re the manager or another member of the team, you want to make sure that interpersonal relationships remain harmonious, supportive, empowering and definitely positive. Here are some easy tips on how to build bonds with your colleagues and enhance productivity as a team.
• Team building activities. Team building exercises are just one of the more effective ways most companies use to encourage participation in accomplishing tasks with each one having individual roles towards a common goal. The idea is to build happy and strong teams by recognizing each member’s knowledge, talents, skills and experience, not only to utilize them to achieve the common goal but to also learn more about each other. Developing trust is also a key focus on these types of activities. Bringing the best out of your employees through team building exercises is a sure hit for developing productivity at work.
• Small office get-togethers. Hosting small office gatherings is a great venue for co-workers to know the people they are working with. In most large companies, people just pass other co-workers without even saying hello. Holding small parties provide the chance to get acquainted and feel comfortable with each other.
• Socialize with the team. It doesn’t have to be a grand occasion. Inviting your team over a cup of coffee or to go out as a group for drinks can make people ease up and lend a relaxed atmosphere when working together. Try to socialize with them even after work. Getting to know your team, up to a certain personal level, will help you understand them better and may even guide you on how to deal with them. It might even help to prevent future arguments while working on a project.
• Create occasions for working together. Small projects that you can all work on, such as research or something that requires working together can be a perfect way to learn more about personalities and compatibilities. Spending time on even small projects will determine how group members cooperate and participate in given tasks.
• Share memorable fun experiences. It can be as simple as eating cheap pizza and gossiping while brainstorming on a project. It can be any number of fun and hilarious activities, but the point is it can make the members feel like they belong and bring your team closer together. Experiences like these are the kind of stuff that build team morale and create strong bonds.
Building bonds with your team can be done even in day to day activities. You don’t have to strain yourself with conventional ways and expensive workshops to build a cohesive team and attain a productive environment. Genuine interest and caring about what makes other people tick is important. If you combine this with being honest and straightforward, there’s no better way to gel with your team. You’d be surprised at the results you get.
So…what do you do to encourage bonding among your team members? Tell us about it!

Hi Karen,
Great post! I think team work and the importance of teams is severely under-rated in today’s work environment. The tips you provide can definitely help bring a team together for the greater good.
One thing that has worked well in the past for me and a lot of my clients is showing appreciation and focusing on strengths. There’s a variety of ways and activities that allow the team to show each other sincere appreciation for their contributions and as well as highlight their strengths. Research shows that when we focus on person’s strengths and how it compliments the team, engagement and satisfaction increase. The more you can share, showcase and focus on the strengths of the team and show that appreciation the more the team will bond as a whole.
I also wonder about your point in getting together after hours. I am a fan of the idea and have participated in many after work cocktail hours. It was difficult for me as a young manager to find the delicate balance between out of the office fun and at work accountability. Over the years I have been able to develop effective boundaries that allow me to balance this scenario. I have seen too many managers fall into the trap of becoming the buddy and losing the trust and respect of their team because of what happens after hours. In my opinion I would try the methods to build my team before this one. If managers are going to take this approach, I strongly encourage them to think about the boundaries they might employ and how they will balance both the informal and formal relationships with their team.
Thanks for the thought provoking post!
