Be the One, Get Hired:How to Impress a Hiring Manager
For some, employment interview is always a nerve wracking experience. After college I have attended several job interview invitations from different types of companies. I always wondered how can applicants impress a hiring manager or how can you convince them that you’re the ONE. There are some instances that the interview would only last for five minutes and then you will see a similar face that an interviewer would make. You will see them thinking of something else. End of the story, the manager is bored. Naturally, to be the perfect “ONE” that a hiring manager is looking for depends on needs of the company and your capacity to provide them what they need. The question is how to pass step one which is the interview amidst the numerous applicants on the line. How can you be different among those applicants and what will be your winning X factor.
There are several factors to consider, not only your resume, your attire nor your work experience. The power to create an impact during interview is the key.
Here are some helpful tips that can empower your ability to inspire your interviewer.
1. Avoid “It’s all about me”
Many applicants are over emphasizing their skills or expertise that would sometimes sound boring on the part of interviewer. Why? Because for sure he already read you resume and you are just repeating what’s in it. Avoid such type of conversation as much as possible. You should understand what the hiring company needs and relate it to your background. Try to do some research about the company and ask specific questions relevant to the opportunity.
2. Make a Connection
Make a connection with your interviewer by engaging in similar interests outside the work environ. Add a dash of non verbal communication to light up the interview process. A simple hand shake or a smile for example will create a friendly feel that will make your interviewer more comfortable the first time he meets you.
3. Be Natural
Avoid complexity. It always works best when you keep things simple. Try not to overly complicate your job interview by explaining too much on a simple question. Take control of your thoughts and try to be comfortable when delivering your speech in a simple manner. Being simple can give you good rewards in everything you do.
4. Display Professionalism
Thank the interviewer for the time and opportunity given to you. Show gratitude by sending a thank you letter. This does not only display proper etiquette but also points out your interest in working for the company. Your interest matters for it will show them that you are willing to contribute whatever skills you have to fill in the position being offered.
Remember, in each job interview the more prepared you are increases your chances of getting hired. The winning candidate should possess the right skills, experience, personality and of course professionalism. And all of these should match the company’s value, needs and priorities. Learning from each interview is important. As they say, practice makes perfect. But don’t become an EXPERT! Get the job you want with confidence!
