With the economy getting tougher and tougher, going to grad school may seem like a far-fetched idea for some. However, taking further studies can help you get to places you can’t reach with just a college degree. It’s a choice that can prove very valuable to your personal improvement and to adding up competencies in terms of your career.
Here are a few ways to know when you need to go to grad school:
If you aim to be the go-to expert…
Extensions to your name like MBA, JD, Ph.D. etc. does not only look impressive but can also command authority on your subject of expertise. It immediately reflects your extensive and in-depth knowledge on the subject and you will be regarded as the best person to go to regarding the area you’ve mastered. In some cases it increases your market value and your opinions will have more value (which then entitles you so a certain degree of bragging rights).
If positions you aim for require higher education…
Some positions, because of their complexities, require not only a college degree but further studies too. So if you’re really serious about getting such positions, invest in further education to stake your claim on these posts.
If you want to increase your chances for a promotion…
When you are vying for a promotion where your competitors have the same exact qualifications as you, it will be a smart way to get ahead by enrolling in grad school. This will increase your knowledge and show your dedication in the industry. Having a grad school degree can help you climb up the corporate ladder faster than others.

If you’ve been caught in the never-ending job search wheel without prospects in sight (due to the economy), then you might want to go grad school. Take time to think of what would suit you best. Going to graduate school may seem like a tough call because of the need to survive the tough economy.
