I Just Fouled Up at Work…How Do I Make Up for It?

We usually chicken out when we commit blunders in the office. In extreme circumstances, some even think of quitting because of the major boo-boo. But don’t be too harsh on yourself. There are countless ways you can fix the problem and make up for the faux pas.

1. Come out in the open. This is the very first thing you should do. Whatever it is, confess the mistake to your boss or your colleagues. Your honesty will be highly appreciated as compared to you hiding it from them. Your mistake might cost the company a lot; on the other hand, they can also help you fix it – but only if they know about it firsthand.

2. Do not shift the blame. Be responsible for your actions. Even though your mistake was unintentional, do not blame another person for it. You surely don’t want the same thing to happen to you. Be mature enough to own up to your actions and be humble enough to apologize and express regret for the error. If you let other people take the blame for your mistake, it might just create complications and compound the problem in the future. Plus people you work with will lose trust in you…and once that’s lost it is so hard to get back up to that level again.

3. Devise a game plan. Do not stop at being sorry for the mistake. Present a very good plan to your boss on how to fix it. You should be responsible enough to initiate a strategy on how to make up for your errors. This effort will also be appreciated and commended in the long run.

4. Work those extra hours. If you have to spend extra hours at home or in the office to provide remedy the error, do so. Go the extra mile to get the problem fixed. Once you get things back in shape, your boss and co-workers would have realized your sincerity. Who knows? You might just impress them with how you handle the pressure.

5. No matter how hard it may be, look for the positive. Learn from your mistakes. Do not feel too bad about it and castigate yourself. Instead, take it as a learning experience. Look at it as another opportunity for you to excel in the things you do best and show other people your skills and capabilities.

Mistakes are a normal part of life. What’s important is that you are able to face up to and overcome the test in front of you. More than saving your job, you should take it as a challenge to build a positive attitude and become a better person.
