If You’re in IT, This is What Your Resume Should Focus on

Let’s face it. Whether we are aware of it or not; fact is, people have become very dependent on computers and technology to a large extent. Indicative of this technology-motivated culture is the continuously soaring demand for professionals in the Information Technology field. It is still considered one of the most sought after jobs in the market. No wonder there’s a sea of IT job seekers out there. If you’re one of the aspiring job hunters for an IT position, you’d better have an eye-catching resume or the hiring manager will disregard you as “just another candidate.”

Your resume should be simple yet comprehensive enough when describing the details of your skills and accomplishments. How to do that? IT is a highly specialized field and there’s only one way to go…write a highly specialized IT resume to match your qualifications. Check out some suggestions on what your IT resume should focus on.

Name your specialty. Make sure that your field of specialization is a clear match to the specialty noted in the job description. Use of appropriate technical language is of course expected and must be written in the right context, and not to confuse the recruiter or hiring manager.

Make sure your skills are current and relevant. Technology evolves; make sure that you’re keeping abreast with new developments in your field. Emphasize your proficiency on the latest trends and current technology. Focus on skills that you know are needed for the job you are applying for, which may include both hard and soft skills.

Show off your networking/social skills. IT personnel and professionals are often required to oversee training, to deliver workshops and presentations, and to facilitate public discussions. Although it’s not something that you or the prospective employer would dwell on, your networking and social skills can be a huge plus to your application; so, they should also be highlighted.

Spotlight your achievements in the field. This is something most employers look for in their applicants. Presenting projects, reports, programs you created, or any relevant data that support your competency and excellent performance adds points and increases your chances of getting hired. Employers are interested in your experience in addressing technology issues as well as coming up with new systems; they want to know if they can maximize every single bit of your skills and expertise for the benefit of the company. Flaunt your accomplishments – in quantifiable terms, of course.

Your education and certificates count. Though some may say that experience hones an individual’s skills, IT is one field where getting the right education is highly valuable. Because it’s highly specialized, employers put a lot of importance on certificates and credentials just as much as experience.

The demand for technology-oriented jobs will continue to be as strong as ever, and IT job seekers are teeming. When you craft your resume, remember that a lot of the candidates probably have identical qualifications as you and keep in mind that the key to the potential employer’s attention is focus and emphasis on information that sets you apart and makes you incomparable to the rest. Be exceptional and get that job today!
