If You Can’t Stand Noise, Try Out These Jobs for Size

Do you hate noise? Are you the type who can’t work effectively when there are people moving and talking around? Or do you simply just prefer a quiet working place? If you are any of the above, then maybe you are better off with these jobs:

1. Librarian. The main rule in the library is to keep quiet. For librarians, silence is their mantra. But let’s not downplay their enhanced role in today’s libraries; they also teach people how to effectively find, evaluate and interact with information; how to become informed citizens in a society that depends on that skill. They help people start up small businesses, help doctors and patients find the latest research on any number of medical conditions, enable teachers to integrate our cultural assets into their teaching, so they can focus on the teaching. We don’t hear it often enough but they are regarded as the lifeblood of our communities, whether that community be a neighborhood, city, a university or school, or a hospital or business. (Thanks to @leavitt9, @disobedientlib and @ksattler for setting me straight with their wonderful inputs.)

2. Medical Transcriptionists. Talking is not a prerequisite in this job. As a medical transcriptionist, you have to be very attentive to the audio recording you are listening to. You have to catch every word, every phrase that the physicians say. You can’t miss a thing and you have to encode each word accurately. Since these are medical documents, there are no room for errors. You can’t afford to get distracted even by the sound of a pin dropping. The best paid transcriptionists are those who turn in work that has the lowest number of errors.

3. Survey Researcher. In this type of job, you are not in-charge of one-on-one interviews. You design survey materials and usually submit your outputs through the Internet. You have a lot of research to do and usually spend your time analyzing certain data and programs. Your need for a quiet work place is certainly met if you have this job; you have every excuse to stay in your room and work nonstop until you come up with reputable survey material and meet the deadline.

4. Translators. Translating a book from one language to another requires a lot of reading, analysis, scrutiny, and editing. If you are a translator, you definitely don’t have much time to chat, and chances are you’d be working till the wee hours of the morning. This job requires a meticulous eye par excellence to carefully translate the document so that the original meaning of the text is not altered. Your eloquence and fluency are best appreciated on paper in this job so you can keep mum all you like.

5. Writers. Most writers prefer a silent environment. Quiet places enable you to think better and put your ideas into writing more effectively. Writers usually spend time brainstorming, writing, editing, and proofreading. A noisy workplace can be distracting and result in errors in your output. Not good!

Productive workers seek out ways to turn in their best possible work within the shortest amount of time possible, and within budget. If that means working in a noise-free environment free of distraction, then it only makes sense to pursue jobs that embrace this concept. In the end, everybody wins!

    Karen,

As a librarian, I can state categorically that for most librarians, quiet is not our mantra, we do not shush people, and we do not wear buns on a regular basis, and we do not just “index books,” etc. etc. We do far, far more! We teach people how to effectively find, evaluate and interact with information; how to become informed citizens in a society that depends on that skill. We help people start up small businesses, we help doctors and patients find the latest research on any number of medical conditions, we enable teachers to integrate our cultural assets into their teaching, so they can focus on the teaching. We are often the lifeblood of our communities, whether that community be a neighborhood, city, a university or school, or a hospital or business.

Your depiction of the library profession seems based entirely on bad stereotypes, rather than any knowledge of the varied environments we work in. I urge you to do a little research, reach out to the thousands of smart, outspoken librarians that populate our communities and all the social networks, before you speak about us in this way. Thanks!

You’ve obviously have never worked as a librarian, nor been in a library recently and are just echoing the stereotype. I’m guessing you also believe all you can obtain at the library is books. You need to visit one and see how it has changed.

I’d suggest you also add programmer to this list. You spend days staring at a computer screen with headphones on while not talking to anyone. It is delightful if you want quiet.

BTW, I’m both – a librarian and a computer programmer.
