Is it Better to Have a Man or a Woman Boss?

Gender disputes and comparisons are always present though we all strive to be seen for our own unique individuality. Let’s face it, there are characteristics that would be stereotypical of men and characteristics that would mostly be attributed to women. In this case, the question about who’s the better boss, men lead in most (if not all) of the known polls out there. This doesn’t make women bosses inferior, though.

Of all the surveys I’ve seen, I’ve noticed the common characteristics that many employees complain about women bosses include being emotional, too detailed and well …nagging. Men bosses, on the other hand, are perceived to be really good problem solvers; the hero of the day or the rescuer in grim situations.

Women are said to be emotional but this can be taken to mean that they’re very passionate about what they do; they tend to get into details when they explain to you what to do and how the work needs to be done. Men on the other hand, talk less and can be a bit distant and seem uncaring but would always be there to fix problems that need his attention.

Both stereotypical characteristics of men and women have their place and their advantage in every workplace. I think it’s a bit unfair to associate our complaints based on gender perceptions.

But think of the ratio: clearly there’s still a dominance of males holding higher positions so I can understand how the general public can collate good experiences with male bosses against one bad experience with one female boss. But as more and more women join the ranks of top executives and holds higher positions, I believe that results of these polls will change over time.

In conclusion, the answer to this question still boils down to our own unique individuality. It’s not just the boss’ gender that matters but it’s your own gender too and your own unique preferences and needs…and how well you can respond and adapt to the quirks and personality of your employer. Who is better? It’s hard to say. But rather than focus on your boss’s gender characteristics, biases and stereotypes, the wisest thing you can do is to perform your job well and complete tasks within the specifications, the timeline and the budget assigned. Man or woman, your boss (and you) determine your future growth within the company. So make the most out of it!
