An effective resume is very important in landing that dream job. Most of the time, employers just look at the resume and decide who is worth the time for an interview. An effective resume will give you the chance for the interview thus giving you opportunity to in getting the job offer. Here are 15 tips to help you to create an effective resume.
1. Determine an effective job objective. The job objective will be your first impression to the employer so it must be job related and it should focus on your potential contributions to the company and not entirely for self gain only. This will have the employer think that you could be an asset to the company and it will give him enough interest to consider you as candidate for the position.
2. Make your resume convincing. List qualifications such as skills and knowledge that has relevance to the job. You should also emphasis on the courses and training you had that will qualify you for the position you are applying for.
3. Make sure to include your positive characteristic that will show your employer that they can trust you with the job.
4. Aim for an interview. There is only so much detail that you can put in your resume that will either impress or bore your employer. In providing the list of your qualifications, make sure to put only the highlights and definitive keywords. Leave out the details and explanation for the interview.
5. Construct sentences in a bullet form. Bulleted sentences are easier and quicker to read. Most employers just scan the resume for specific information or qualification they require and important information may be missed in lengthy paragraphs.
6. Keep your sentences short and precise. Employers don’t look at the way you construct your sentences. They are more interested in the information you provide. So keep it simple enough for them to absorb the important information in your resume.
7. Start with action words. Action words (resume buzz words) make your resume noticeable and give you character. Words like supervised, monitored and developed emphasize your role in your accomplishments and somehow summarize your capabilities.
8. Use keywords. In describing your qualifications, put words that matches the one used in the ad for the job qualifications they require.
9. Use powerful and job related adjectives that precisely describe your competence and expertise in particular fields.
10. Keep it positive. Highlight information that will be relevant in your job application. Leave out irrelevant personal information and anything that will cause confusion or conflict in job qualification.
11. Accentuate what you know. If the job requires specific skills, don’t hesitate to highlight the depth of your knowledge in areas related to that specific skills or knowledge.
12. Give out names. If you have worked for or reported to an important person, like with a vice president, or have had training under someone who has a name in your industry, write it in your resume.
13. Make the appearance of your resume easy to read. Don’t use too small font size; point 12 should be the average. Leave white space in your resume.
14. Have your resume reviewed by others. Note their comments and be open to suggestions.
15. Submit resume to desired possible employers. The more potential employers you submit your resume to, the more chances of you landing that dream job.
