When Your Job Search Needs a Shot in the Arm…
Does your job hunt feel like a dead end? I know it can get really frustrating especially when you’re counting down days or weeks without getting a reply. But giving up is just not an option. If you keep doing the same things that seem to get you nowhere, then it may be time to try out something different.
Here are 3 ideas you can chew on to give your job search a shot in the arm:
Go out and meet people. After you’re done setting up your online profile on social networks and announcing that you’re on the lookout for a job, get personal. Gathering leads from personal contacts can be very effective and speedy too. Ask your friends to hook you up with their friends who are in the same industry you’re looking to get into and then ask those people to introduce you to their other friends who can possibly get you a job lead. Meet as many people as you can. Attend open conventions, seminars and exhibits. Doing this can help you penetrate the hidden market. (You do know that only 20% of jobs are advertised online, right?) More connections means more opportunities.
Volunteer your time. If you can’t get a job you want, volunteer while you’re waiting. Doing this not only opens yourself up to making new connections, but it can also help you build on your skills and experience and provide you with a good reason for having a gap in your resume.
Get help. You’re not alone. There are a lot of people out there who are going through the same frustrations as you are and there are people who overcame it. Get help from experts or join groups of people online who are sharing their experiences and tips on what to do and what not to do. Learn from them and share your ideas and experiences too. This can both be fun and insightful. These new acquaintances can help you get leads on jobs they found that may be suitable for you.
So what are you waiting for? Revitalize your job search. Breathe life back into it. Don’t just wallow in your depression or start entertaining doubts. If you start treating the job search like a project or a job you have to complete, then you will be more inclined to make it to the finish line. It’s time to get up and go!

I love this post Karen. I think sometimes job seekers want an easy answer from a to b, ie: send out a resume and get a job, but sometimes jobs come up in weird ways and from doing the many things you suggest. Volunteering in particular, I have always found amazing!

For me, volunteering does a couple of things: it shows your humanity, and it shows you care for causes or issues other than your own. That says a lot about a person, and in some cases, could help you land the job you want!
